ADAMS, DOUGLAS
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
Front room A5 blue white text, Pan Books Ltd. 1980. (ISBN: 9780330262132). Paperback, 18cm. Paperback in good condition. From Library Journal Warning! This second volume in the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series is definitely not a standalone book. Enjoying, or even understanding, the continuing adventures of Earthling Arthur Dent, his strange pal Ford Prefect, and the very, very odd Zaphod Beeblebrox requires previous study and preparation. Confusion and possible insanity awaits the poor soul who tries to figure out the second title without having read the first. Arthur and Ford, having survived the destruction of Earth by surreptitiously hitching a ride on a Vogon constructor ship, have been kicked off that ship by its commander. Now they find themselves aboard a stolen Improbability Drive ship commanded by Beeblebrox, ex-president of the Imperial Galactic Government and full-time thief. Used: Acceptable.

ALLEN, D.H.
West Riding: V. 2 (Super Prestige)
dark blue, Venture Publications Ltd. 2005. (ISBN: 9781898432401). Paperback, 16.8 x 1.5 x 24 cm. Condition good, clean. West Riding 1 was published in early 2004, the year in which the West Riding Automobile Company would have celebrated its Centenary. It followed the company history from the tram era through to its loss of identity when finally absorbed by Arriva in 2000. In this second volume author David Allen now tracks the two major companies absorbed by West Riding, J Bullock and Sons (1928) Ltd (B & S Motor Services) of Featherstone in 1950 and then South Yorkshire Road Transport of Pontefract through Caldaire Holdings in 1994. Both those companies developed from the same Bullock family transport roots at the turn of the last century. Following the now established and popular Super Prestige format, this book has an extended introductory text and around 150 illustrations, many in colour, accompanied by detailed captions to complete the story of one of the most individual of the West Riding of Yorkshire operators. Good.

BABU, V.
Fundamentals of Propulsion
blue, ANE Books. 2009. (ISBN: 9788180522529). Paperback. Condition good, clean. Ane's Student Edition. ref ZKVQ The unique features of the book are: (1) chapters exclusively devoted to a discussion of fundamental concepts in propulsion, namely, gas dynamics, turbo machinery and combustion, and (2) separate chapters on the theoretical, practical design aspects of aircraft engines and thermodynamic aspects and analysis. This pedagogy allows the students to learn the concepts and ideas first and learn problem solving and analysis techniques later. Worked examples and exercise problems have been chosen to give the reader a feel for the application of the concepts learnt to practical situations in propulsion. In particular, the problems in Chapter 7 on thrust calculations are based exclusively on production aircraft engines, both military and commercial. These are comprehensive and are formulated to test the understanding of the subject matter. The last chapter on ramjet and scramjet is intended to give an informal introduction of these advanced concepts to enable those who are interested, to pursue higher studies in the propulsion area. Used: Acceptable.

BANKS, JOHN
Classic Leylands: V. 1 (Super Prestige)
green, Venture Publications Ltd. 2001. (ISBN: 9781898432340). Paperback, 16.8 x 1.2 x 23.8 cm. Condition good, clean. The first in a new, enlarged series from Venture, based on the successful Prestige Series. This book is twice the size (though not twice the price) and features photographs from the famous G H F Atkins and Senior Transport Archive collections as well as contributions from smaller but no less valuable sources. This volume examines "classic" Leylands up to the suppression of traditional, front-engined buses. It looks at the remarkable Leyland range from the Lion, a masterpiece in its own right, the later G J Rackham designs, and the models based on his designs which found great success all over the world in the 1930s. Coverage stops with the first unfrozen buses of the wartime years, and the story will be picked up in a subsequent volume. Venture's regular transport writer John Banks has provided the introductory text and captions and no enthusiast for Leyland's products of the classic period will want to be without this sparklingly illustrated addition to the marque's literature. Good.

BANKS, JOHN
Classic Leylands: V. 2 (Super Prestige Series)
purple, Venture Publications Ltd. 2002. (ISBN: 9781898432319). Paperback, 16.8 x 1.2 x 23.8 cm. Condition good, clean. Venture's 'Classic Leylands 1', published in September 2001, looked at buses and coaches produced by the Lancashire manufacturer in the 15 years up to the outbreak of the Second World War. Many of those vehicles worked hard through the six years of war and many survived to run in the postwar period. It was not unknown for early 1930s, and even late1920s, vehicles to survive in service into the 1960s. At the beginning of the war Leyland provided hard-pressed operators with a number of what became known as the 'unfrozen' chassis - those built up from parts in stock before the emergency - and when hostilities ceased was in the forefront of the new battle - against austerity, rationing and general shortages - to 'export or die'. The new postwar models were the PS and PD ranges of Tiger single-deckers and Titan double-deckers, which were immediately popular with operators throughout the United Kingdom and the World. Leyland's order book was full and the PS/PD ranges proliferated until replaced by underfloor-engined single-deckers and the Atlantean rear-engined double-decker. 'Classic Leylands 2', again written by John Banks, looks at what was happening on the streets of towns and cities, as well as in remoter districts, in the war years and approximately the first two decades of peace as the industry and the country struggled to find their feet again. Using a magnificently varied selection of over 200 photographs, for the most part not previously published and including many gems from the G H F Atkins and Senior Transport Archive collections, the author brings together the survivors from the prewar period and the new postwar designs to complete the survey of Leyland up to the phasing out of the traditional, forward-engined double-deck Titan in the 1960s. Good.
